Fair Isle Weekend takes you on an exciting trip to Fair Isle, a windswept island in Shetland, famous for its traditional colourwork knitting. During her many trips to Fair Isle, Mary Jane has been fascinated and inspired by the island’s rich textile traditions, learning about Fair Isle knitting by looking at old textiles and sharing stories and knowledge around a cup of tea. Now, she has created a gorgeous collection of designs which she would take with her for a weekend trip to Shetland when a carry-on bag is all you take with you.

“So I invite you to join us, this small band of traveling friends, sharing a little glimpse of the isle from my outsider’s perspective. I offer you a small collection in my own style of Fair Isle knitting, which I hope honors the tradition, even though my work isn’t especially traditional.”

Mary Jane Mucklestone is a knitwear designer, teacher and author who has specialized in Fair Isle knitting, also called stranded knitting. Her work has been featured in publications like Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits and various books. Mary Jane has a varied background in art and textiles earning a BFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, studying fashion at Parsons School of Design and Textiles and Historic Costume at the University of Washington. With her friend Gudrun Jonston, they host popular once in a lifetime trips to Shetland. Fair Isle Weekend will be her fifth book. Find more about Mary Jane at MaryJaneMucklestone.com

“Hey! I’m Mary Jane and I love to knit, especially with lots of colors.

I’m a knitwear designer, specializing in Fair Isle knitting, also called stranded knitting. I travel around the world connecting with the amazing and diverse fiber community by teaching handknitting classes. Sharing my knitting knowledge is a joy. I hope my students will learn new skills while having fun at the same time! Working one-on-one with my students, I aim to give them the courage to try new techniques.

To learn more about my designs, you can see my patterns on my Ravelry  page, where you can also join my Ravelry group to be the first to hear about special updates!

I have written four books: 200 Fair Isle Motifs, 150 Scandinavian Motifs, 150 Scandinavian Knitting Designs, and Fair Isle Style. “
