You never know what the day will bring with spring, so it’s the perfect season for layering!

All of the pieces in this issue play with opacity, texture, and  colourwork, layering techniques, tones, and transparency – sometimes all at once!

The initial inspiration for this issue came from layering in images such as risographs, shadows, and superimposed photos, which got Pom Pom thinking about printing and how it works. As a print publication, transferring the words and images they craft so carefully onto paper is part of what they do.

They’ve also invited two equally awe-inspiring people to model our knits for you this season. Angel Joy Flores and Alicia Roth Weigel are both activists who work towards a more equitable world for the LGBTQIA+ community in Texas and beyond. More than ever, representation of trans and intersex people is vital and they were honoured to work with them.

Featuring designs by: KLARA NILSSON – KLARYBERRY // MAREN ODENTHAL – KNITTERISTA // JESS KAVANAGH // JULIA MADILL // ARA STELLA // SUSANNA KAARTINEN – SANNA AND CO // JOANNE FOWLER // AMALIA SIEBER – KINDRED RED // SORAYA GARCÍA

Issue 44 also includes a celebration of the art of screen printing by Mei Stephens, who muses on the parallels between printing and knitting, and Hannah McGregor’s second contribution to Pom Pom, this time taking on the colour yellow and its cultural history. If you’re looking for a sweet treat, our recipe for bebinca, a layered Goan dessert, will have your mouth watering!

Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 44: Spring 2023

Welcome to Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 44: Spring 2023! You can find all details for this issue’s patterns on their blog.

Pom Pom was founded in 2012 as a quarterly magazine that would present knitting, crochet, and craft in a modern, beautiful, and meaningful way. Mainly conceived as a collection of patterns complemented by thoughtful writing and useful tutorials, Pom Pom also celebrates the joy of making, hopefully without taking it all too seriously!

“Since our kitchen table beginnings, we’ve gone on to feature some of the most well-known and loved independent designers and yarn producers, with some of the less well-known also growing along with us. We are so proud and lucky to be able to say that Pom Pom is now stocked at over 250 locally-owned yarn and craft stores across four continents and 20 countries. At Pom Pom we know that knitters are creative, curious people – so we also include lots of other features we think you’ll enjoy – from cocktail recipes to dyeing tutorials, to articles about 18th-century paper cut artists! Basically, anything we think will inspire you. We also take pride in every detail of our magazine, from the typefaces we use right down to the paper we’re printed on – knitters are tactile people after all! We have always been, and continue to be, printed in the United Kingdom.

Pom Pom continues to grow, and we very much value each and every one of you along with us on the journey! We are so excited about bringing you more thoughtful, beautiful, joyful, educational, and inspirational knitted (and crocheted!) goodness for a long time to come.”
