These naturally dyed skeins of Elena are all hand dyed by Ioana herself. She has used Indigo, Cedar & Madder, resulting in a stunning range of colours; from pale to deep Indigo, rich yellow and shades of clay pink, brick red and a beautiful deep saturated purple. This yarn is hand dyed exclusively for our store. And as we only have a very limited amount of these, make sure to get some while stock lasts!
Most are dyed in batches of 10 50g skeins. Due to the process of the natural hand dyeing, the difference between batches can be quite significant and even within the same batch you might find variation between skeins. Make sure to order enough for your project and alternate skeins every other row while working with this yarn.
All skeins are hand dyed and if you order online, there’s no option to order specific skeins/colours. You can always let us know your preference (e.g. darker/lighter) in the comment field while checking out, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. However we unfortunately can’t guarantee the specific colour requested. If in doubt, please contact us to get more information about what is left in stock.
Elena yarn (called after Ioana’s Grandma) stands for being close to nature: no harsh chemicals were used while cleaning, washing and spinning the wool. This yarn has personality: its twists and curls were worked by machines that are 100 years old. It is honest: it is about going back to basics, to the core of things. Any garment worked in this yarn will have a rustic, rough feel and even basic textured stitches will be accentuated. The wool is washed in water at different temperatures, salt and mild eco-friendly detergent. Still, the yarn retains some of the protective layer of lanolin. Lanolin is the wool wax that help sheep to shed water from their coats and so, Moeke yarns are especially suited for making garments that need to keep moist at bay, for instance gloves or socks.
