De Rerum Natura is a wonderful small yarn producer in France.
Cross & Woods carries Cyrano, Gilliatt and Ulysse – these yarns can be found here
Gilliatt and Ulysse are carded wool yarns from a new breed of white merino bred in the Alpes de Haute-Provence and black merinos recently established in the Creuse thanks to the initiative of the Lainamac association and the spinning mill of Rougnat who takes care of all the stages of manufacture.
Manufacture comprises of – The fleeces are washed and freed of a maximum of impurities and plant debris. The fibers are then carded to increase the amount of air they contain and mixed according to the desired color. The carded fibers are spun into a first roving yarn which is then twisted three times for Gilliatt and twice for Ulysse. The threads are put in hanks for dyeing or washing according to the colors. The spinning mill uses a completely biodegradable ecological softener in this step.
The skeins are then put into balls which are then lovingly labeled with recycled paper in Rennes, before being sent to you. Gilliatt owes its name to the handsome, obstinate and constructive hero of the Workers of the Sea by Victor Hugo and Ulysses to the hero of the Odyssey in love with his Penelope. They are warm and soft wools, beautifully wild while being very soft.
