John Arbon Exmoor Sock yarn enhances the durable character and bounce of the fibre from their local Exmoor Blueface sheep – a crossbreed of the Exmoor Horn (full-bodied and hard-wearing) and the Bluefaced Leicester (renowned for its softness and lustre).

Naturally dark browny-black Devon Zwartbles has been added, giving extra bounce and a subtle fleck of colour, plus Falklands Corriedale to enhance softness and stitch definition and a hint of Nylon for durability.

This Exmoor Sock yarn not only celebrates Exmoor, but is designed to be perfect for socks, whilst still having the versatility to suit garments and accessories that relish a hard-wearing, machine washable yarn.

When creating the shades John and Juliet were inspired by the changing seasons of their local Exmoor landscape. The national park is not only where they live, but home to many rare wild flowers, insects and animals, in amongst the grazing Exmoor Blueface sheep.  You can always catch a flash of deep saturated colour when exploring the greens of the hillside and blues of the bay.  So, when selecting the names for the 13 shades, it seemed only fitting to turn to the traditional local dialect of days gone by for example Oddmedod means snail, Quick Beam are rowan tree berries, Bibble Bug is a woodlouse and Drumble is a bumble bee!

A perfect choice if you fancy stripes or colourwork, as Exmoor Sock is available in handy 50g skeins.

John Arbon Textiles Exmoor Sock 4ply is a beautiful fibre from the John Arbon Textiles family mill.

John Arbon and his wife Juliet started the John Arbon Textiles Mill nineteen years ago.
John Arbon Textiles is based on a very simple concept: a return to old-style textile manufacture by sustainably sourcing raw fibre locally, wherever possible, and converting it in the UK into high-quality tops and yarns, rather than racking up air miles by chasing the cheapest available labour.

Their mill is one of only a handful of small-scale worsted spinning mills still operating in the UK. John likes to use fibre from sheep on their doorstep whenever possible and, with the help of his trusty team, transforms it into unique and sumptuous blends in the form of yarn and tops.

Rather than being focussed on the outcome alone, JAT pours love into every part of the process. With great love and respect for the machines involved, the breeds of sheep and kinds of wool, John and Juliet will only work with fibre that excites them.

And that excites us. John Arbon yarns are wonderful yarns to work with. It’s one of those yarns that you knit or crochet with and you know your work will last for decades.

Have a look at John Arbon Textile’s wonderful video “A short day in the mill” or read more about their process and machinery here.

Besides the John Arbon Textiles – Exmoor Sock yarn, we carry more John Arbon yarns which you can find here.
