Seasonal Plant Dyes – Alicia Hall

Seasonal Plant Dyes takes the reader on a seasonal journey throughout the year, showing them how to create colourful and environmentally friendly dyes using the different plants available in each season.

At the beginning of the book there is practical advice on the best types of fabrics to use with plant dyes, details of a method that uses soya milk to help the dyes to stick to fabrics and some tips to help the reader harvest dye plants in a sustainable way that doesn’t impact on the environment in a negative way. Each dye plant includes detailed horticultural information on how to grow them (or where to find them in the wild) along with notes on the best way to harvest them to ensure that the plant can be used year after year for making colourful dyes.

Easy to follow tutorials on extracting the dye colour from each plant are then followed by instructions on how to dye fabrics and yarn with the plant dyes. Each season includes a project that utilises a collection of dyes from that season, bringing them together to create a beautiful textile project.

Description

“So, who am I? I’m Alicia Hall, and I first discovered the magic of making dyes from plants when I stumbled across it in a horticulture book. After months of colourful experiments with plants and fabrics, I started my business, Botanical Threads. Discovering that I could make dye from plants was a eureka moment for me. I come from a fashion background and completed a degree in Fashion Design before going on to run several small (very, very small) creative businesses in the evenings and weekends, while I worked a series of boring (very, very boring) day jobs.

When I bought my first home, I realised that I had to put in some effort if I wanted to have a nice looking garden. This sparked a passion for planting, and I somehow ended up working as a gardener for the National Trust. For several years my head was full of dahlias and daisies. Then I found out about dyeing with plants and realised that I could combine my two passions: my love of horticulture and my enjoyment of making things with fabric.

Now I spend my time working on Botanical Threads from my little home studio and going on weekend walks in the countryside with my husband and son. It’s slow going as I make them stop every few minutes so that I can take a photo or collect some plants to create a dye, but they don’t complain too much!”
