Description
“So, who am I? I’m Alicia Hall, and I first discovered the magic of making dyes from plants when I stumbled across it in a horticulture book. After months of colourful experiments with plants and fabrics, I started my business, Botanical Threads. Discovering that I could make dye from plants was a eureka moment for me. I come from a fashion background and completed a degree in Fashion Design before going on to run several small (very, very small) creative businesses in the evenings and weekends, while I worked a series of boring (very, very boring) day jobs.
When I bought my first home, I realised that I had to put in some effort if I wanted to have a nice looking garden. This sparked a passion for planting, and I somehow ended up working as a gardener for the National Trust. For several years my head was full of dahlias and daisies. Then I found out about dyeing with plants and realised that I could combine my two passions: my love of horticulture and my enjoyment of making things with fabric.
Now I spend my time working on Botanical Threads from my little home studio and going on weekend walks in the countryside with my husband and son. It’s slow going as I make them stop every few minutes so that I can take a photo or collect some plants to create a dye, but they don’t complain too much!”
