Liberty’s Tana Lawn™ cotton is a fabric built by obsession, perfected into a modern masterpiece of production through a bespoke process that has evolved over a century. Here it is prepared in a slightly different process to ensure GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification, along with the usual Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 rating. Printed in Liberty’s very own Liberty Printing Mill in northern Italy, the organic version of their signature Tana has a beautifully warm and soft touch, combining rich fluidity with vibrant print quality.

Liberty Tana Lawn is unique: a fabric made from specially selected ultra-fine long-staple cotton, woven from 70 and 100 ply yarns, with exclusive and superior qualities that have elevated Tana to its iconic status. Once woven, Tana is subjected to a lengthy series of preparations, followed by a process of mercerization that swells the fibers of the cotton, enhancing handle and luster, and stabilizing the fabric finish. Mercerization also increases dye absorption in the rotary screen printing or the latest digital print technology, allowing this fine fabric to carry color and print magnificently.

Liberty Fabrics – Tana Lawn Organic Cotton is part of the Liberty Fabric collection at Cross & Woods and can be found here

Whist travelling the plains of East Africa in the 1920s, Liberty buyer William Hayes Dorell discovered curious cotton fibers close to Lake Tana that sparked his imagination. Back on home soil, the silk-like threads were spun into lustrous form, screen printed with brilliant ink, and turned into a material that would change the textile industry forevermore. It was, of course, Tana Lawn.

Nearly a hundred years on, Tana Lawn has come to be recognized as a unique part of Liberty heritage. To this day, the bolts of fabric stacked in the Liberty haberdashery department are the product of a bespoke production process: hand-drawn by Liberty London in-house design team, screen printed in the factory a stone’s throw from Lake Como and cared for by skilled technicians who oversee the production of over 150 different designs.
