More about Tencel:

Tencel is a cellulose fibre, which like rayon is made by dissolving wood pulp. It is durable, resistant to wrinkles and has the silkiest drape to handle.

It has excellent natural breathability with 50% greater moisture absorption than cotton. Making it a good choice for those with sensitive skin. It is also anti- bacterial and thermoregulating.

Eco credentials:

The process of Tencel production ameliorates much of its own environmental effects. Like cotton, Tencel is made from plant materials. However, manufacturing Tencel requires less energy and water than cotton. The solvents used to turn the wood pulp into fibre are contained in a closed loop system, with a quoted recovery rate of 99%. As a naturally derived fibre, Tencel is also biodegradable.

Although it is dyed conventionally (which can be harmful to the environment), Tencel requires a lot less dye than cotton. The manufacturers are actively striving towards greener, cleaner and more efficient production and are currently investing in new, renewable energy sources.

CAROLYN DENHAM AND RODERICK FIELD BEGAN MERCHANT & MILLS IN 2010 WITH THE INTENTION OF BRINGING STYLE AND PURPOSE TO THE OVERLOOKED WORLD OF SEWING.

Style: The decision was made to put style to work in the presentation and packaging, as a language that would attract the very people that had hitherto overlooked sewing. Equally, they were determined to include the steadfast makers and menders who had continued regardless of current trends

• Purpose: in supplying patterns, fabrics and tools that allowed the creation of a desirable functioning wardrobe. Merchant & Mills  offered a viable, wearable alternative to the increasingly indistinguishable options of the high street.

Merchant & Mills continues to grow steadily, evolving and developing as experience and ideas demand. Carolyn and Roderick now travel the world in search of unique and beautiful fabrics, finding aesthetic and practical inspiration along the way. Merchant & Mills products are stocked in the world’s most respected outlets and the company has successfully collaborated with London’s V&A Museum and Alexander McQueen.

New patterns and products emerge, never rushed to market, but slowly developed to be exemplary, desirable and pragmatic.
Their ethos is to respect the roots of sewing, from trade to home dressmaking, as we enable and inspire more people to find the satisfaction of simply making. To this end, they have published three instructive, illustrated books.

Carolyn Denham has a degree in Fashion Design and has worked in New York, Italy and London.
Roderick Field is a respected photographer with works in the National Portrait Gallery.
