This course is meant for absolute beginners who would like to learn the basics of sewing with a sewing machine, step by step. In six 2-hour lessons, you will learn the very basics of sewing; building your sewing confidence to soon tackle those bigger projects yourself!

This course is intended for people with little or no experience with a sewing machine, or who would like to do a refresher course.

    ABOUT THE CLASS

During this course you will learn your way around a sewing machine: from threading your machine, to talking about all the different sewing machine needles and feet (and how to use them), to adjusting tension, and making those first stitches! Your teachers will talk about sewing tools & notions, haberdashery and what is useful and when you can benefit using them.

You will learn about different fabrics, and the basics about selecting the right fabric for a project. Your teachers will guide you in how to sew with different fabrics and how to handle them before, during and after sewing.

For these projects you will have to draw your patterns, and you will soon be learning everything about marking, cutting, pinning and the art of pressing!

At the end of this course, you’ve completed three different projects: a toolkit/tool roll, a pressing ham & sleeve roll,  plus a fully lined and zippered project bag.

Not only will these projects boost your sewing confidence, you will actually be making incredibly useful and helpful tools, that will be of great help for the rest of your sewing career!

    ABOUT THE TEACHERS

The beginner's sewing course will be taught by Aisha and Jerry, two The Hague Based professionals, who will alternate the classes.

Aisha: “After school, she studied at the Modevakschool, but afterwards she ended up in the corporate world after school. However, the passion for sewing was never lost and she realized she wanted to turn her hobby into her profession.

Soon after she started. Aisha, influenced by socials developments towards a circular economy, started wondering about her own fashion footprint. This is where she started her own up cycle atelier, where she can pour in her creativity into a more sustainable way of making. Simultaneously she is back now at the Modevakschool, this time to finish up getting her teaching degree.”
Jerry: “I'm a late starter when it comes to sewing, but I was always curious.

From an early age I wanted to be a fashion designer, everything in my life turned out a little differently. However the passion for fashion (and how it’s made) never faded.
My sewing journey really started in 2019, when I wanted to make something that I couldn't find in the store. And when I finally found it, the quality was so poor that I decided at that moment that I‘d better make it myself. So naturally, I immediately ordered a sewing machine.
Of course I was completely inexperienced and knew nothing about presser feet or fabrics. I had absolutely no clue what to do with my newly bought sewing machine!

Still, I took that first step and have never looked back. It is relaxing for me, and every moment of spare time I like to spend with my machine.
I really enjoyed it so much, that I decided to enroll the Modevakschooll, to continue learning new techniques (by hand and machine) that will keep me on my toes!“
